self-limiting

self-limiting

There’s a lot of things

a week into

LA County’s reopening

you can do,

you could choose to take out someone new,

wait till next weekend to see the same one,

or think about replying to the text from an old one

who happened to mention she’s down the street from you,

I picked

to ride my bike down to the beach

buy a $20 stick at the cigar lounge on 2nd St.,

come home to smoke it on my balcony,

drink a Sam Adams,

and talk to you.

I get it that most people

don’t have the time to read,

but like a meth addict’s teeth,

you can only last so long on candy,

and who knows

if the words inside of your head

belong to you or if they

are only a reiteration of something

you heard on the news,

evolution is more than something

I learned in 5th grade Science Class

from that teacher with the abnormally large ass,

it is a change to be achieved,

like Lord Byron’s poetry,

Don Juan being

a satire portraying

womanizing not as a craft,

but as a man easily seduced;

like how much freedom we’ll give away

in the name of saving face,

you say that you don’t care what they see,

but the matter of fact is

that being so far from truth

you can no longer see,

they say if I take another one out,

then I have to let this one go,

but I look down and see

a man with two hands,

holding on is just a philosophy,

like when I become an average

of the five people around me,

I don’t like the way I act

around that wanna be,

but in reality actualization

might tell me that even my enemy

reflects me.

Belief,

like turning off the TV

even if you’re lonely

and standing up to see

the man that you can be,

JFK’s, “Ask not

what this country can do for you,

but what you

can do for you.”

What does Genesis 6:4 mean to you?

A man is only as good

as his next thing to do,

don’t judge me on yesterday,

but look at me right now

watch Dave Chapelle’s 8:46

say, “Goddamn,”

and realize just how

great a man can be,

and tell me that it isn’t self-limiting

to think that you have to remain

in pain in order to see,

an internal hypocrosity to believe

that if you’re happy

then you won't be able to perceive,

Bruce Springsteen

never worked a day in his life,

but was to the poster boy

for the American dream;

the only thing stopping me is me

and you is you,

we can be anything,

but pick something

because we’ll all reach an age

when the notes stop coming,

and if you wait till then

you won’t remember how to sing.
